First Anniversary of Roundhay Evangelical Church - Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th October

First Anniversary Logo

This will be a very exciting weekend.  We want to thank God for all he has done in raising up a new church, and we want to earnestly seek him to bless in greater ways in the future.  We are still formulating plans, but it looks like a day of prayer and fasting on the Saturday as we focus on God, and bring our needs and longings before him, and a special morning thanksgiving service on the Sunday.

"Bible: Fact or Fantasy?" Day Conference - Saturday 18th October 2008

This is a rare opportunity to hear someone at the forefront of academia share insights and principles on the Bible.

Our guest speaker is Peter Williams. Peter is warden of Tyndale House in Cambridge (a centre of Biblical scholarship). Previous posts include Senior Lecturer in New Testament at Aberdeen University, Research Fellow in Old Testament and Lecturer in Hebrew and Aramaic in Cambridge. He is an excellent speaker, and a good teacher at all levels (from PhD students to children on French beach missions!).

"Not many scholars can speak competently across as many technical fields as can Pete." (D.A. Carson)

The Bible is absolutely key to the Christian faith. This is a day that will greatly increase our appreciation of what God has given us.

Programme, venue and times still to be confirmed - watch this space.

FIEC Engage Day in Otley - Saturday 5th July

Over 100 churches have been invited to ENGAGE at which Peter Parkinson will be preaching on the theme "God of the Poor, Friend of the Weak".

As well as the ministry, the day also provides opportunities for people to mingle and chat, play some sport, games and have fun together. For the energetic there will be football and swimming. For those who would like to take it a little easier there will be a walk and a stroll. For the children there will be bouncy castles. For everyone there will be a bookstall.

During the main sessions there are meetings for all ages of children and young people: a Crèche for 0-4 year olds, a Children's Meeting for 5-11 year olds and a Youth Meeting for 11-16 year olds.

Whilst the day is organised by churches belonging to the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) in the West & North Yorkshire area, it is for all Bible believing churches and Christians. Everyone is welcome, and we are sure people will find it an enjoyable and helpful day.

Nearly 200 people came to this event last year and the response was extremely positive. We do hope you will encourage as many as possible to come and benefit from the day. We look forward to seeing you.

Bank Holiday Outing - Monday 26th May

We are planning a church visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Our destination has been specially chosen to have something for everybody!
  • Children can run around, both in the park and exploring some amazing sculptures.

  • Some of us may wish just to sit and chat with a cup of tea.

  • Other could do a walk around the grounds.

  • Modern sculptures litter the grounds. They are varied and appeal to all types. There are some galleries to view as well.

The plan is to meet there at 12 noon, have an hour to explore, then have lunch together. After that we can choose how to enjoy the facilities!

  • Take sandwiches for the picnic and drink if you wish.

  • Meet by the car park at 12 noon. It takes 40 mins to get there from Roundhay. Either coordinate your own lifts or see Gordon.

  • Admission is free but car parking is £4.

Directions: take the M1 south. Exit at Junction 38, take the A637 towards Huddersfield, and follow the Yorkshire Sculpture Park brown heritage signs for one mile until you reach a roundabout. At this roundabout, turn left past Archway Lodge and follow the road through to the car park and Centre. It is about 20 miles altogether.

7-String Guitar Concert - Friday 16th May

On Friday 16th May from 8pm, we are hosting a 7-string guitar concert with John Featherstone.

The event will be an informal concert during which the public is given an insight into the artist's compositions and underlying beliefs.

The 7-string guitar is a rare instrument. This guitar was made for John by Andy Manson, one of Britain’s foremost luthiers. The extra string is a bottom A, extending the range, and adding a richness of sound colour.

John is a gigging composer who has been living and working in France for the last 18 years. He has a dozen albums (solo and choral) and a wide variety of touring shows to his name.

The evening is by ticket only though the tickets are FREE. Tickets can be obtained from Cara, Elspeth or Kim. Ticketing simply allows us to have an idea of numbers and to ensure we don’t exceed the maximum.

Cheese and wine will be served during the course of the evening.

Go-Karting - Friday 29th February

Meet at 6pm at the go-karting place, or meet at St John's Parochial Hall at 5.20pm.

A message from Dave McNutt:

As you are aware, we will be Karting from 6 on Friday evening (details on the website). If you are intending to go and have not yet told me that you will be there, please let me know asap so that I can revise the booking numbers. There is still time to invite friends, just let me know when they have confirmed.

Also, if you anyone wants to go out for a bit of food afterwards, I have some half price food vouchers for the Slug and Lettuce' in Leeds which we could take advantage of. The menu is attached and we would get 50% off the food prices (not drinks). I've provisionally booked a table but can revise or cancel this as appropriate. Let me know if you want to this as well.

If your are not Karting but fancy the food, let me know and I'll add you to the list.

New Year's Day Walk

Roundhay Evangelical Church are having a joint walk with City Evangelical Church and Batley Evangelical Church on 1st January 2008.

Walkers and strollers should meet on New Year's Day at Oakwall Hall Country Park (bottom car park), at 10.30am. The Country Park is to be found on the A652 between Birstall and Birkenshaw (from Leeds, exit M621 at Junction 27 and follow the A62 to the junction with the A652, turn right at the lights - Oakwell Hall Country Park is approx 1-2km from the junction on the right hand side). The paths through the park are good and suitable for push chairs (as long as there's not too much mud!). We are planning to arrange two walks - one fairly short (a stroll), the other a little longer (not quite a hike). Stout foot wear is recommended, please wrap up well if the weather is cold and wet.

After the walk soup, rolls and cakes will be served in Soothill Community Centre (straight back down the A652, towards Batley. After passing Tesco Extra in Batley, turn left at the next set of traffic lights. Turn first left after the lights up Soothill Lane. The Community Centre is on Broomsdale Road, which is the turning on the left hand side immediately after the Post Office. Look out for the Centre on your right hand side just along Broomsdale Road).

Please let Dave McNutt know if you plan to be there.
